about

Nihil means "nothing" in Latin.

November 27th, 2019 - December 31st, 2020.

Absolute Nihil was born out of an unpleasant time in my life. At the time my ADHD was undiagnosed and I was struggling hard with the waning days of college admissions, putting off writings that I could not afford to put off. It was an emotionally draining balance of guilt, shame, anxiety, and boredom.

Absolute Nihil was a rendering of that suffocating feeling, producing what I semi-seriously nicknamed "Depressive Suicidal Harsh Noise Wall," or DSHNW. Each track consisted mainly of a short fragment of scraping and scratching looped and buried in effects for the maximum runtime allowed by Bandlab. Influenced by The Rita, Werewolf Jerusalem, Sludge Metal band Grief, and various minimal noise/ambient/drone artists. Tracks were made quickly in times of deep boredom and unhappiness.

As I gradually lost interest in the project, with my life turning around and static noise growing boring without the element of catharsis, I decided to pull the plug on the project. Absolute Nihil served its purpose, but now it's time for it to go.

Two of my family's cats, Spooky and Puddy, appeared in thumbnail art for Absolute Nihil tracks. Both passed away while Absolute Nihil was active. Empty Sound is dedicated to them.
